Orthodontics is a specialisation in dentistry which focuses on the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of irregularities of the teeth and associated facial structures. Orthodontic treatment usually involves the wearing of braces to improve the health, appearance and function of your teeth. The benefits often go beyond the obvious physical changes in the bite, it can sometimes greatly improve a person’s overall self-image and confidence. An attractive smile is a wonderful asset that should remain with the individual throughout life. It is an investment in one’s self, anything that can contribute to enhanced self-esteem can often greatly contribute to one’s general wellbeing and attitude to life.
Over the past number of years the demand for adult orthodontics has rapidly increased. 50% of our practice is made up of adult patients. Once gums and bone levels are healthy, there is no age limit to achieving a pleasing smile. So many adults are genuinely unaware that almost all treatments are appropriate for them and are pleasantly surprised to learn of how discreet the modern appliances are.
Once the permanent teeth have erupted (usually from age 11 onwards), this is the ideal time for comprehensive orthodontics so that straight teeth and a healthy bite are established early in life. More than likely your friends and classmates are similarly having braces during the teenage years and it is nice to feel good about your smile from a young age rather than having to take time off work or college later in life.
The American Association of Orthodontics recommends that from the age of 7, children should have their bite checked with a specialist orthodontist. At this stage, it is possible to detect any problems in the growing jaws or in how the teeth are erupting. Most do not require treatment at this age, but if there are any growth issues, prompt correction will reduce the need for more complex treatment at a later age.
There are many occasions in life when we like to feel good about ourselves and smile with confidence. Whether it is your first day in a new school, your debs ball when finishing secondary school, graduating from college, getting married, attending anniversaries or other family events, we are always happy to invite you to visit us and have a chat about what can be done to improve your teeth before your next special event.
